Disappearance

So for the first blog I did I wanted to share this post as it is nearing the anniversary of when the McStay family disappeared. I read about it online three years ago when they went missing, but figured they would eventually turn up because how can a family of four just walk away and vanish in to thin air? If they left willingly, how could they leave their home, parents, siblings, pets behind along with the lives they have established? If they were kidnapped, how could no one have seen a family of four being taken unwillingly? So many things in this story just do not add up, but I believe there is someone out there that knows what happened to the McStay family.http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/26/justice/mcstay-family-disappearance/index.html?hpt=hp_c3
If I were to introduce this story into my classroom, I would do it on a unit of safety. Many children in our classrooms may not know not to get in the car with a stranger, or even look both ways before crossing the road. When I was observing at Cook Elementary last semester, they had a day where the police and firefighters came to talk to them about safety and I would introduce my lesson the week the professionals came to talk to the students.

  1. Jessica,

This was a very interesting post! I don't remember the disappearance of this family, but I like your idea of using this story in the classroom. As you stated in your post, some students don't know not to talk to strangers. We as teachers could let them know the importance of this.

  2. I think this is a very neat idea. I had never heard about the missing family before reading your post. Teaching our students how to stay safe is very important. I think it would be great to incorporate this into a unit on safety!

  3. Using real life examples for our students is one of the most important aspects of teaching. Although the students or teacher may not personally know the family, it is still relevant because the family is real. Safety is also an important topic in the classroom year around.

  4. Great post, Jessica! I believe this is a great idea to use! Using real life examples about situations like this may have an impact on our students (esp. with the older grade levels!) Out of all the subjects we may teach them, their safety should always be our number one goal!

  5. I have never heard about this family and it does seem very odd that they would just disappear. I think it would be a great idea to introduce this story to your future class by talking about safety and safety workers. I also think this would be a sensitive issue to discuss in the classroom and it should be done with care.
